About QFI

Advanced microscopy instruments for the electronics and semiconductor industries — built on more than 60 years of infrared imaging heritage.

What We Do

We design, manufacture, and through ongoing R&D, continue to develop advanced microscopy systems for the electronics and semiconductor industries. Our instruments are used by failure analysis engineers, reliability engineers, process engineers, and research scientists working across defense and aerospace, power electronics, silicon, GaN, GaAs and SiC, photonics, and optoelectronics applications.

When a device fails and the root cause is unknown, our instruments help take the first critical step — giving engineers and researchers precise, reliable data about defect location and device behavior at the moment of failure.

Company Heritage

Over 60 Years of IR Microscopy Leadership

QFI’s technical roots trace to the very invention of the infrared microscope. That depth of expertise shapes every instrument we build today.

Executive Team

Founder, and President: Grant Albright.  Prior to founding QFI, Mr. Albright applied his training in physics to a variety of IR detection and imaging problems in the aerospace industry. He lead one of the earliest efforts in IR focal plane R&D at Hughes and has written numerous technical papers on IR detectors and applications. In his role as team leader, Albright expanded the Hughes technology into commercial applications via EDO/Barnes Engineering. Mr. Albright spun off this technology from EDO/Barnes in 1997 and founded QFI.

QFI Chief Scientist: Chun-Pang Li.  Mr. Li has spent more than twenty years developing infrared detectors and electro-optical technologies.  He has considerable experience in optics, optical lens design, and optical systems design dating back to his previous work for Hughes Aircraft Company and Barnes Engineering.  Mr. Li is QFI’s in-house mathematician and has spent a fair amount of effort modeling, explaining and predicting the performance of the QFI infrared microscope products.

1963

EDO/Barnes Engineering builds the world's first infrared microscope, laying the foundation for thermal analysis of electronic components.

1995

Pioneering development of the tester docking platform at Barnes — a concept that shaped modern semiconductor failure analysis workflows.

1997

QFI founded in Vista, CA as a spin-off, carrying forward the IR detector and photoemission IP to focus exclusively on the semiconductor market.

2001

QFI introduces multi-sensor platform architecture — the first system to combine photoemission, thermal, and LSIM on a single integrated microscope.

Today

Worldwide support operations across the US, Asia, and Europe. Serving semiconductor fabs, packaging houses, universities, and government labs globally.
